Summary

In StorageGRID 11.6 the Grid Manager UI incorrectly allows unsupported grid expansion scenarios leading to metadata inconsistencies and data loss.

WARNING

DO NOT add Storage Nodes to an existing site while adding a new site in a single expansion.

[Impact: Critical – Data loss/corruption]

Issue Description

Adding any nodes to an existing site while also adding a new site in a single expansion is not supported. Due to a bug in the Maintenance > Expansion UI in 11.6, this expansion scenario is incorrectly allowed because the “Site Selection” prompt may be displayed for each node that is added. If a single expansion includes both adding Storage Nodes to an existing site and adding a new site, metadata inconsistencies will occur leading to data loss.

Symptom

If this unsupported expansion scenario occurs, a significant increase in LKCU messages will be observed in the audit log when compared to historical norms.

Workaround

Always select the same response to “Site Selection” if re-prompted within the same expansion. Never mix “New” and “Existing” in the same expansion.

WARNING

DO NOT add Storage Nodes to an existing site at the same time as adding a new site in a single expansion.

Solution

Upgrade to StorageGRID 11.6.0.7 or later, available on the NetApp Support site, to correct the UI to only permit supported expansion scenarios and an issue documented in SU522.
