[Impact: High Node disruption and potential loss of data access.]
After installing an X1151A NIC with firmware version 1.0.X into an A400 node running ONTAP 9.13.1RC1 or 9.13.1P1, the NIC cannot be upgraded to the bundled firmware version 1.4.0-E-114. As a result, the NIC will not function properly.
Issue Description
Applies to:
- AFF-A400, ASA-A400
- X1151A: 2-port 100GbE Smart IO
X1151A replacement cards from NetApp logistics depots or your spare part inventory might be programmed with old firmware (1.0.X) that cannot be upgraded by ONTAP 9.13.1RC1 or 9.13.1P1. The NIC will not function properly because it cannot be upgraded to the compatible firmware version 1.4.0-E-114 that is bundled in these ONTAP versions.
Symptom
The nodeshell sysconfig -v output shows the X1151A NIC firmware version remaining at 1.0.X:

The following error message dcan be seen on the serial console port:
[ionic_dev_cmd_check_error:567] DEVCMD(241) failed, status: IONIC_RC_ERROR
Workaround
- Upgrade the NIC firmware to 1.4.0-E-114 by performing a netboot of ONTAP 9.13.1P2 or later
- Procedure:
- Download the ONTAP image from the NetApp Support Site
- Halt the system to the LOADER
- Netboot the ONTAP image. See: Netbooting a FAS and AFF Controller in ONTAP 9
- From the Boot Menu, select Option 5 (Maintenance mode boot)
- Monitor the console message for firmware update activity concerning the X1151A (ionic)
- Use the sysconfig -v command to confirm the X1151A NIC in slot 3 has updated to firmware version 1.4.0-E-114
- Enter halt to halt the system back to LOADER.
- Enter bye to reboot ONTAP normally.
Solution
Upgrade ONTAP to 9.13.1P2 or a later recommended release with the fix for Bug 1579508.
